Gardening with Kids

The Obamas are doing it in the White House, why don't you? It's not only easy to do, but it's inexpensive and fun for the children. You can do container gardening for a balcony or window sill, or use a small area of your own garden.

You can start off with tomatoes, peppers, hot peppers, carrots and radishes (bring out that Peter Rabbit book!). Lettuces such as arugula, and spinach are good too. Finally, the herbs. Cilantro, basil, oregano, chives, parsley and rosemary are definitely staples for the garden and cooking.

I take my son with me to shop for the plants and ask him which ones look good, or which ones would he like to have in the garden. For the digging, Target has some cute garden tools for kids and sometimes you can find some at dollar stores. Imagine, water and dirt...a kid's dream! He helps me to water them, pull out weeds, point out when it's growing a fruit or vegetable or if it is taller. Later, he gets to harvest them and try it out!
